Calling All Nomads & Wanderers:

Any advice on packing for a year abroad?

Any advice at all?

P.S. People keep asking me if I'm packed yet. The answer is no. haha. What is it with people packing days earlier? It's not gonna take me THAT LONG to pack. Yeah, I get that I'm packing my life...but I'm also trying not to over think and carry too much. And so I ask you, dear readers, what are the essentials?

  1. Pack a few hours before you leave, but have a list from days before so that everything's been washed, etc.

DON'T take too much (I am so bad at this, but seriously). See if you can find info online (or maybe you already know) about climate, customs, appropriateness, etc, and don't take things that don't fit in with that. Remember that you will definitely buy things while there, that you won't get rid of as much as you think, and that your stuff will likely become a burden to you. ; )

I recommend something like: 8 dresses, 4 skirts, three jeans or whatever, three-four pairs of shoes, 12-15 tops, three sweaters and various scarves, one light jacket and one coat (if necessary).

Don't take knick-knacks, photos, etc. Take the photos on your laptop and you can print them there if you want to (or if you want to take hard copies, limit yourself to a few). Erm... try and take it easy on books, but obviously you'll want some since you're going to a non-English speaking country.

CAMERA! All cables and chargers that you will need! Skin cream! Extra razors that fit your blade since they may not have the same brand...

Hehe, I should charge consultancy fees. ; D

  3. When I was packing for SD I just packed the night right before leaving, as long as you have the passport, a wallet, camera, and a phone you should be fine! ;)

Could be a good idea to also pack something you know you'll miss & can't buy in Turkey ;D

    Have a safe trip! :)

  4. Any keepsakes that remind you of home. All the clothes you can fit. Books. English-to-Turkish translation books (for me, anyways; are you fluent?).

When I went to NYU, I brought a ton of stuff that was unnecessary, but I did bring as many clothes as I could. Toiletries. Pictures of loved ones. Writing materials (from laptops to journals).

  5. I never ever pack until the day before. Look up things that you CANT get in Turkey, or that are hard to find, and stock up on those. Also, make sure to pack little things like chargers & since you are planning on teaching, a good TEACHER bag. Something you can carry around with you all day, that can handle your books, and is professional looking. Also, look at what you need IMMEDIATELY versus what you can get later. You can always buy more things where ever you travel, so my best advice is to see what you can't get, and go from there.

have you looked at your phone situation? OH AND GET A LINT REMOVER, especially if you'll be going to interviews!
