A Three-Sentence Movie Review

This is getting fun for me...

Before Midnight

via
Just as thought-provoking as the rest of the Before movies due to some of the most realistic, best scripts ever penned. The acting is so gritty that sometimes you'll forget you're watching a movie and start to feel uncomfortable. It's hard to say that Before Midnight is my favorite of the three, because each film is a different stage of the relationship and really should be looked at as one long saga.

This is the End

via
Everyone raved about this film, but I wasn't surprised to see yet another typical Seth Rogen & The Gang film. It's got the same stoner, 13-year-old boy kind of humor that I don't find particularly funny or daring (it's just so...expected). However, there were a few stand out jokes, such as the Monkey keychain dubbed Terrence Peterson (giggle).

Don Jon

More clever than it initially lets on, especially with the porn bit being a little distracting for some. A poignant and current commentary on fantasy, reality and brainwashing in the game of love (and how to see past the game). I knew Joseph Gordon Levitt wouldn't let me down, and Julianne Moore is the wildcard in said game.

Flight

Denzel, is that you?? A gripping movie from start to finish, but maybe don't watch this if you have a fear of flying. A little preachy at times, but it gets the ultimate point across and makes you feel good by the end.

  1. I had never heard of these 'Before' movies. It doesn't seem like something I'd love, but Richard Linklater usually doesn't let me down, so maybe bottom of the queue for later. I unfortunately watched This is the End and you're spot on. Plus James Franco is usually a sign for me to stay away, but then there was 'As I Lay Dying'. We're usually pretty solid, movie-wise, but I can't go along with Gordon Levitt. Just can't do it. ;) Flight is streaming on Amazon Prime, so I think I'll give it a go.

    1. Take 'Flight' with a grain of salt. Sometimes I like formulaic movies. You may not be a fan of this one, but I enjoyed it. I can't BELIEVE you haven't seen any of the Before movies!

    2. P.S. WHAT is your beef with Joseph?!?

    3. I probably haven't seen enough of his movies, but there are just certain movies he's more suited for. 500 Days, that one fit. But I think I would've enjoyed Looper more if it had been cast differently. If Dark Knight Rises had had a better script, I'm sure he would've ruined that as well. Haha. I'll give him an ok for Inception. I guess I'm just not a big fan of him in Action/Thriller type roles. Here's where you can get me back: I will watch anything and everything where Alan Rickman is cast. I also have a soft spot for, um, *cough* Nic Cage *cough*

    4. Oh Nic Cage. But I have to agree with you on Cage, cause he does actually have a few gems amongst the, uh, crap.

  2. I love the Before movies, but have yet to see the third installment. I think I'll need to catch IC up on the first two before we dive into the third one. Even though the 'gross out' movie genre isn't really my thing - I have made a commitment to supporting any one/any movie with a Freaks and Geeks actor in it. So I'll be seeing This is the end eventually. Flight is not for me. And I've never heard of Don Jon - but am a lover of Joseph.

  3. More useful than the reviews on other websites. Do you have a lot of time these days? Still trying to break your netflix addiction too? Haven't seen flight or even heard of it. hmm...

    1. Currently working part time, so yeah I have too much time! I'll always have a movie addiction though, even when I'm busy I make time for movies...

  5. Ugh, I saw This Is The End and ended up walking out of the theater. It was just... WEIRD. I saw it with friends and we were mainly laughing at how screwed up the movie was... not at actual humor. I like stupid humor, but that movie was just stupid.

I'm so iffy on Don Jon! The porn thing throws me off. But I lovvvve JGL so might be one I check out a few months from now when I have nothing else going on.

    1. Give it a chance :) The porn is central to the story, but not in the way you are thinking...

  6. When I saw Flight in the theater with FAB and the crew, we all decided that 1. it is the most anti-alcohol, pro-cocaine movie ever made, 2. that John Goodman was the best part. In other news, some of my favorite Nic Cage gems include The Rock (gotta love the 'prom queen' lines), National Treasure (perhaps one of the only sequels I enjoyed more than the first one), and MOST ESPECIALLY The Family Man. Good God, I love that movie. Bonus, Don Cheadle. That is all...

    1. HAHAHA. It totally is pro-cocaine. Didn't think about that, but yes!
