Gilmore Girls, A Review

Gilmore Girls

Confession: I watched Gilmore Girls religiously when I was in high school, and then sort of stopped watching my first two years of college (I was BUSY). So, when I saw that it was on Netflix, I knew it was time for a Gilmore Girls-a-thon! (Yes, readers, there will be spoilers in this review).

I forgot how good Gilmore Girls is, and also good at three particular things: relationships, relatability, and dialogue. GG is brilliant at showing the ladies build, nurture, and sometimes end relationships that leave you with all the emotions the ladies are feeling. I rooted for Dean (POOR DEAN!), I sort of hated Jesse (until he grew up), Paris may have been my favorite character, I liked both Luke and Christopher, I really had a thing for Logan (I get why she turned down the proposal, but noooooo!)...and I felt like I was in it. It totally didn't help that Rory was about the same age as I was, making it uber relatable to me!

Battle of the Boys

Beyond that, the show was relatable because it captured every day life so well. Going to the market, stopping by the diner, chatting with the townspeople--these are all seemingly trivial things that strengthened the bond of the town, and again, helped us understand the relationships so well.

Lastly, how can I bring up GG and not talk about the quick-witted, fast-talking dialogue the show was  known for. It was great watching this series again as an adult, because I picked up on way more jokes and allusions to historical and literary figures. GG is funny, and if you don't listen closely, you might miss something. Some of the best quotes included:

Lorelei: Give me a burger, onion rings, and a list of people who killed their parents and got away with it. I need some heroes.

***

Rory: Do something to make me hate you!
Lorelei: Um, go Hitler?

***
Paris: Maybe I shouldn't go. I mean, what if I fall for him and he doesn't like me?
Rory: Then you'll find someone else.
Paris: But what if there is no one else?
Rory: Then you'll buy some cats.

***
From the last episode, where Rory is going to leave for an indefinite amount of time:

Lorelei: Get a window seat, honey, cause there's so much to see.

Cue Ashley crying like a baby. Because the very best thing about Gilmore Girls? The rock solid, iron-clad, ride-till-we-die relationship between Rory and Lorelei. Because it makes me want to strive for that bond with my own parents, my future children, and all humans. Only a true work of art can make us strive for such a noble cause. I'll drink a cup of coffee to that.

  1. I toyed with the idea of doing one of these GG posts myself, after watching the entire series again on Netflix. I might still do it (you've inspired me again) because I have different thoughts now seeing it as an adult. I have to say I agree with ALMOST everything you've said here. I did NOT like Logan. He was probably oneof my least favorite characters of the show. Him and Rory were just so...boring. Jess was exciting! And sure he went about things all wrong, when he was younger, but he matured so much! I wanted them to end up together. And when Lorelai went back with Chris in the last season - ugh, that killed me. He was AIGHT, but Luke was the obviously the one. I just saw it a space-filler, to be honest.

The dialogue and relationships were on point though. Loved those aspects of the show. So great. I just wish the last season hadn't been so much of a mess. Especially when the first few seasons were damn near perfect!

  2. I forgot to mention that I started binge-watching Gilmore Girls in October! For whatever reason, I never had any interest when it was on air. But when it was released on Netflix in October, it almost sounded like the ideal Autumn TV comfort food. So far I am only on season 2. (F-ing Jess. He needs to stop swooping in after Rory.) Like you, I am team Dean. Woot!

Anyhow, I love the snappy dialog and the pop culture references that were probably above most WB viewer's heads at the time. Seriously, how many tweens were familiar with Nick Drake and Lou Reed?

More importantly, like you stated, the show makes me want to reach out to my own mother more often. (Although typically speaking, if I receive a phone call from her its generally because one of my bills was sent to her.)

  3. Ok yes, I forgot to mention what you said about the last season...there was NO reason to throw in that quick marriage with Christopher. I think I personally had a thing for Logan (hehe), but agree that they were not the perfect match. I saw an article that she should have been with Marty. UM YES!

  4. SO MANY POP CULTURE REFERENCES THAT I GET NOW! Hope I didn't spoil anything for you in this post, so keep watching! Then we can talk about it :)

  5. So you have finally finished? That is quite the accomplishment! It feels as though it could take an eternity to finish the show....but I'm getting there!

  6. Yeahhhh, I was watching them every night before bed (which sometimes went to late into the night...)

  7. I've owned the entire series on DVD since about 2008. It really was an amazing show. The series finale made me cry because I was in a similar predicament around the same time (guy I was dating was going to grad school, his family didn't completely approve of me, etc). I haven't watched it on Netflix because I own it. And because now I'm binge watching Secret Life of the American Teenager, which is making me wish Degrassi was on Netflix.

  12. I almost feel like I grew up with Gilmore Girls, it's been so long since the last time I watched it and I'm actually hesitant if I'll like it as much as back then... will definitely have to have a GG marathon sometime soon! :)

  13. You won't be disappointed! It's even better watching as an adult!

  14. A friend of mine loved this show and she got me to watch a few episodes years ago (i think when they were first released on DVD. I made it through about 4 episodes before deciding it wasn't for me, but now, every time I hear "My Little Corner of the World" I think of that show. I think they used it in the first episode and that was the most exciting thing for me. 'It's YO LA TENGO!'

  15. haha, I will admit that Gilmore Girls is probably the ultimate chick show. While some guys might like it, it must be something like a 90% female fan base (guesstimate but probably accurate).

  16. This is one of the shows that I want to sit and do a marathon over. :)

  17. One of my deep secrets is I too was a huge GG fan. I loved the quirky characters. Like, Paris, or Michel, or Troubadour. And as you state, the dialogue was unsurpassed. My two favorite lines: Lorelai, describing Luke: "He's the most complicated man I know who owns a Doobie Brothers record." And in describing one of the RenFaire women at Luke's sister's wedding, "can you say Leslie VanHouten?"
