What's Happenin' (in March)

Have you asked yourself, "what's been happening in Ashley's life in NYC?" (you wonder all the time, riiiight?). Just like Lumbergh from Office Space:

1. I've been brunching it a lot, which I am convinced is a practice that started in NYC to begin with.

2. I had a smashing birthday party (I turned 31...weird age!).

And yes, you can sing "LADYYYY IN REDDDDDDD" to me. G'head. 

3. I became obsessed with Neko Case and (and her band the New Pornographers, when she's not solo) thanks to Donny. They've been around awhile, and I've heard of em before, but didn't really listen until a few days ago. I am just BLOWN AWAY. Seriously guys, listen. 

4. I've been SEARCHING for a good spring jacket. Recommendations??

5. I've booked trips to London, Berlin, and...wait for it...TURKEY. More on this later, but I AM SO EXCITED I CAN'T CONTAIN MYSELF BECAUSE TURKEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. 

6. I've been enjoying photographing the city.

7. I've been happy spring is just about here. Which really means shedding off winter blues for some more vibrant colors.

Adams Avenue Street Fair

The Adams Avenue Street Fair is a unique fair in that it's centered mostly around music.

 And food, of course. 

 These are cupcakes made with beer. San Diego has become craft beer obsessed. 

 You may not be able to tell what this is, but it's the greatest contribution Canadians have made to the world. Poutine!!!

Remember Churro??? Since I live in the same country as him again, you'll see him on the blog more.

The fair is an annual thing and began with a group of policemen performing in the 80s, but has expanded to what must be a hundred performers. Best part? It's free :) 

Justin, I Still Love You...Even Though You Straighten Your Hair

I felt like it was about time that I offer my views on Justin's new music. I am, after all, a part of his inner circle.

Let me be quite honest about "Suit and Tie." Justin--this really is just a B-Side single. It doesn't have the pizazz of "My Love," the innovation of "Sexy Back," and the sophistication of "Cry Me a River." It's not your best effort. You can add all the A-List rappers you want to spruce it up, it will still be just okay. "Mirrors," is better; however, it's instantly reminiscent of stuff you've done before. 

My greatest fear is that this new album of yours will just be an extension of the magnificent Future Sex/Love Sounds. I always thought of that album as your Off the Wall moment. Of course, this means the following album should have been your Thriller. I'm not quite sure we're heading in that direction, and maybe that's too much pressure to put on one artist...but it's because I believe in you, kid! 

Now, I still have faith in you. I've heard "Pusher Love Girl," which is Motown-infused and thus wins my heart. I have yet to hear the other tracks and I still believe you're going to bring us something magnificent. And there's something to be said for hearing real instruments on the radio again, not just techno-infused dance numbers. 

So, this is not your Thriller, but I will say I'm thrilled to hear the rest. Quite honestly, you could put out an album of belching and hand-clapping, and I'd still love it, I'm sure. So put on that Suit and Tie, and shake your booty something fierce. We all like it when you do that. But seriously, Justin--stop straightening your hair.

Punch Brothers, My New Love

I'll make this short, because talking about concerts never does them actual justice.

If you like blue grass mixed with classical, check out Punch Brothers! They'll be touring the States very soon, and it's sooooooo worth a ticket. Simply, it is now in my top 5 favorite concerts. And if you are wondering what instruments you're seeing, there is the mandolin, fiddle, guitar, bass and banjo. Genius!



Also, sorry for the blurry video, but Chris Thile playing Bach on the mandolin is well worth a listen!


 

The band was nice enough to talk to fans after the show, and Chris even took a picture with a gushingly happy Mel...

This was one of my best nights in London: red wine in a plastic cup and beautiful, beautiful sounds to uplift my soul...ahhhhh...

A Little Bit of Music Therapy

I went to a music jam session this morning with two girls that have studied music therapy. One girl on the piano, one girl on the guitar and me singing along, shyly at first...then feeling quite free after the first song.

It was about repeating certain empowering lyrics and feeling it in your bones, of you believe that hippie talk.

But it turns out that I do sort of believe it. There is something quite special about live music, no? I honestly think it has to do with the vibrations actually shaking your organs up and loosening up the body. And however it works, anxiety definitely slips away. I feel good! I think this can be a daily practice for me--singing and dancing (and maybe even chanting a bit?).

Basically, I am starting to embrace the notion of looking like a crazy person. And being totally fine with that.

Day 26: A Song That You Can Play on an Instrument: "Heart & Soul," a.k.a the theme from Big. Actually, the last thing I was able to play on piano was the "Minuet," but since learning it in fourth grade and quitting piano lessons to have more outside play time, I have forgotten it. So, Heart & Soul it is!

Day 27: A Song That You Wish You Could Play:

Do I have to pick just one? Well, I would say "Moonlight Sonata" for this category, but seeing as I'm not going to take piano lessons anytime soon, I want to pick something a little easier. And since I don't have him on my countdown thus far, and because I've been in a major John Mayer mood of late, and because poor John has to have surgery on his vocal chords...

I would love to learn "Edge of Desire." Why? For it's beautiful simplicity. It's sort of a sad lullaby, relaxing and melancholy all in one go--Mr. Mayer at his finest! And, I think it wouldn't be too terribly hard to learn. Eh, but what do I know?

It's in the Music, Man.

I went to a street fair over the weekend, which provided plenty of live music.

Pretty sure listening to live music is my favorite way to spend the day, as I can do just that for hours and forget all about time and space and even reality. Music is transcendent in that way, no?

And oh gosh, when you find a musician that makes your blood bubble up inside of you to the point of explosion, in where you feel the tears welling up behind your eyes because so many emotions are running through your system, you're simply gonna burst--I love that. I. love. that.

It is in that moment where I think God has come down to meet me on earth, because nothing else matters in those minutes but you and this supernatural experience.

I haphazardly tried to take a video of one of the local artists, but this never works out well--the quaint camera on my phone can only provide so much quality, and the experience is thus downgraded. Still, I'll post one video of Trevor Davis, an artist who brings up all those emotions I mentioned. I love it when I see passion unfolding on stage, and how it makes me realize my own passions. That is true art. This is not one of his original songs, but a cover was all I could record, as I deemed it necessary to put my phone away for the rest of the show and just listen. Listen to my heartbeat, listen to his voice, listen to the guitar and listen to my humanness. Yes.

Music Challenge, Day 22: A Song You Listen To When You're Sad

I definitely listen to music the most when I'm sad. To be all emo about it, art is my therapist when I'm suffering.

Therefore, I'm going to post multiple videos for this entry, to show my therapeutic process:

Phase One: Recognizing Pain

This is the moment you come out of denial and realize that, yes, you are suffering. I've been learning, in my old age, not to run from this feeling, but to let it run it's course in me. This is the mourning period, if you will. Of course, the saddest of songs come out at this stage, such as Sheryl Crow's "My Favorite Mistake," or Otis Redding's "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay." There's also this gem:

Phase Two: Coming Out of Pain

After being all cried out of phase 1, you realize that it's time to move on. This is the period where I'll play hybrid sad songs (sad songs that have an optimistic twist), as a band-aid of sorts. This includes Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" ( I love his version the best), Travis's "Side," or my favorite song for this category:

Phase Three: Forgiveness and Closure

Instead of letting my sadness turn into rage, I always try to work on the healthier avenue: forgiveness. My favorite saying on forgiveness is "Not forgiving is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die." Through this last step, I let go of the fantasy, face reality and learn how to truly say farewell. For this, I play such songs as "Last Goodbye" by Jeff Buckley, or my favorite (and a song that has actually taught me how to forgive):

All of these songs have at one time or another brought me to tears. I usually try to hide and hold back tears, but I've been teaching myself to embrace my humanity more often, as to not slowly turn into a robot.

Music Challenge, Day 21: A Song That You Listen To When You're Happy

Oh, we're still doing this challenge? Oh right, ok...

It's funny to choose a Simon and Garfunkel song for this category. Because Simon, and his sidekick Garfunkel, are always...so...depressing. And emotional. And DRAMATIC.

But I don't know what it is about this song. I love playing it on sunny days, to match my sunny disposition. And I think I figured out why.

This song is about accepting things they way they are, even if there's a bit of a melancholy acceptance there. I know the background on the lyrics, and it's detailing the break-up of the duo that is Simon and Garfunkel. But Simon sings with such a positive perspective that you realize--he knows it's time for a change.

I believe that true happiness comes from accepting change, from knowing there are seasons in life, and being at peace with knowing you won't always be mind-blowingly happy all year round. Simon gets that. In his lyrics, in his tone, he understands. He sings, "Half of time we're gone but we don't know where, we don't know where..."

And, I love the line: "I get the news I need on the weather report...hey, I've got nothing to do today but smile..."

I'm smiling too. Not everything is perfect. Not every day is journal-worthy. Still, I've got happiness here. I've got peace here.

I picked this little fembot powerhouse dragon slayer (all appropriate words to describe her) because she'd do quite well on the radio. But for some odd reason, she's not getting played. Makes me question what exactly drives the top 40 to the top 40. Hmmm...

But I digress.
